In this work I am recreating The Final banquet of Cleopatra, the famous meal where she dissolves the most
expensive pearl in the world in a glass of wine.I have used Tiepolo's painting as inspiration.
My work 'The banquet and the Circus' is a 8 metre collage on board is and
has 10 powerful people living and dead selected from one Week end edition of The Australian.
My version includes in
order left to right: George Clooney,
Michelle Obama, Silvio Berlusconi, Clive Owen, Lionel Richie, Barak Obama,
Gwyneth Paltrow, Shane Warne, Elizabeth Hurley and Frank Sinatra on the floor.
This work was completed in the time just after the election of Barak Obama. There was a sense that life as we knew it was going to
change and become fairer, sweeter and more beautiful.
It is a warning, talking
about absolute power and the ways we bestow it on our heroes, movie stars, politicians
and sports stars. In copy of the banquet Michelle Obama has the pearl earring
on her plate, deciding if she will to dissolve the earing in a glass of wine. And the singer/ fool lies on the floor, revealing in the spectacle.
